Western Civilization 1: week 6, The Peresian and Peloponnesian Wars.

The Persian Wars started when King Darius of Persia wanted to expand his empire. The first battle in the Persian Wars was when Persia invaded Greece, in 492 BC. At first during the start of the war it looked like the Persians were going to win, but later into the war the Persians suffered two great defeats against the Greeks at the land battle of Platea and at the naval battle Salamis. The Greeks ended up winning the Persian Wars. No one knows what would of happened if the Persians won the war, but it probably wouldn’t of been good for western civilization.

The Peloponnesian Wars was a war fought between the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League. The war lasted from 431 BC to 404 BC. The Delian League was named after the island of Delos, which is where it’s treasury was of the Delian League was. The Delian League was led by Athens and it’s allies against the Peloponnesian League which was led by Sparts and it’s allies. The war started when Sparta attacked Athens, because of their growing fear of Athens. Sparta ended up winning the war and became the strongest nation. There were still some small wars between different nations trying to become the stronger nation, but in the end nobody really cared any more and the war ended.
