Would you describe the cyclopes in the odyssey book 9 as having a civilization? According to the Meriam Webster Dictionary a civilization is “a relatively high level of cultural and technological development”. I think that the cyclopes in book 9 of the odyssey did not have a civilization. Why or why not? The cyclopes lived alone in caves in the mountains of an island, they did not grow anything, they just gathered wild food and had sheep and goats. I think that if the cyclopes had had a civilization they would grow their own food and would be more civilized.
What happens between the Cyclops and Odysseus and his men? How does the story end? While Odysseus is on his way home to his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus after escaping from the island of the lotus-eaters Odysseus and his men come to the land of the cyclopes. There was an island not that far from the island of the cyclopes with a lot of goats on it so Odysseus and his men beached their boats and camped on that island. The next day they killed a lot of goats and ate them for food. The next day they had a meeting and Odysseus told his men he was going to the island of the cyclopes. He anchored his ship at the island and took his twelve best men with him on shore. They found the cave of a cyclops and found that there was a lot of cheese, milk, and wine. They stayed there till the cyclops got back because Odysseus wanted to meet the cyclops. When the cyclops got back from tending his flock he started a fire and found Odysseus and his men. The cyclops demands to know who they are and Odysseus tells the cyclops that they are Greeks returning home from battle. The cyclops gets angry when Odysseus mentions gods. He pounces on them and eats two of them. Then he falls asleep. The next day the cyclops eats two more men for breakfast and goes to tend his flock of sheep and goats. Odysseus figures out a way to get away. He finds the cyclops walking stick and cuts off a piece about six feet, sharpens it and hardens it in the fire. That night Odysseus gives the cyclops wine and tells him his name is Noman. The cyclops eats two more men and falls asleep. While the cyclops is sleeping Odysseus and his men stab the cyclops in the eye. When the cyclopes neighbors come, because they hear him screaming, the cyclops says Noman is killing me and the other cyclops think he’s crazy. Odysseus and his men get out of the cyclops cave by tying themselves to the bottom of the cyclops sheep. The story ends by Odysseus getting back to his home and getting to his family.
